December Snow and Winter Birding Notes

Originally posted – January 1, 2021

December brought cold and snow.  Central PA received about 15 inches of snow in mid-December, which is more snow than received last year in the region.

The bird activity has slowed at the feeders.  The birds seen in most abundance have been the Dark-eyed Junco and the House Finch.

In this pic, Dark-eyed Juncos are feeding on seed scattered on a concrete bench.A listing of the birds seen over the past month:Most commonly seen

  • Dark-eyed Junco
  • House Finch
  • Crows
  • Mourning Doves
  • Downy Woodpecker
  • Northern Cardinal
  • (House Sparrow)

A few sightings

  • Goldfinch
  • Red-bellied Woodpecker

Then, there is the regular fly-by from the Coopers Hawk.

It has been amazing on how close one can approach the hawk before it flies off.  It does not scare off easily.
